MUMBAI:THE ₹12,000-crore Phase-i of the ambitious coastal road that will ease traffic between the island city and western suburbs will also feature jogging and cycling tracks, open theatre, playgrounds and police posts among other landscaping.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will build the 9.98km road along the west coast of Mumbai- from Princess Street flyover to the BandraWorli sea link.
The BMC will reclaim 90 hectares of land for the project. Out of the 90 hectares, 70 hectares (making up 77%) will be available for landscaping and other facilities like police posts, public toilets, pedestrian crossing and bus stops.
The coastal road construction will be on the remaining 20 hectares (23%) of the reclaimed land, said civic officials on Thursday. The information was disclosed in a presentation on the project made by civic chief Ajoy Mehta to the media.
The entire coastal road is 29.2 km long-- from Princess Street flyover to Kandivli. Out of this stretch, the BMC is constructing 9.98 km from Princess Street to the Bandra-worli sea link (BWSL).
The 9.98km-long road with three underground parking spaces near Amarsons Garden, Worli Dairy and one near Haji Ali Interchange have a capacity of 1,625 vehicles each. The BMC has also proposed to create open spaces above the three underground parking lots. The coastal road will have four interchanges, and an undersea tunnel of 6.9km.
