“The project business has grown multi-fold since I began a decade ago. The competition has increased now,” said Jeet Hirani, founder, Jeet Techno Solutions, another city-based consultancy, which has branches in Borivli and Thane.

Most consultancies started small, but witnessed steady growth over the years. Mokashe, Govardhane and Narkhede started off from a small rented room in Ambivli area of Ulhasnagar, when they were second-year BE students of a college at Asangaon in Shahpur taluka. They had to juggle between their own assignments, examinations and their work. “One of us would write our assignments, while two of us would make projects. We could skip lectures as our teachers realised we were doing something worthwhile. We would start preparing for exams only a few days in advance as we were pressed for time,” said Govardhane.

Hirani began his venture, also as a student, from his home. “It was a hobby for me. I wanted to work in the industry when I graduated in 2008, but couldn’t find a job due to recession. So I decided to continue this work.”jeet Techno Solutions creates 500 projects every year for students across India.

College teachers said this industry is thriving because of a lot of factors.

“College workshops, with their limited instruments, are not sufficient for projects. Students often don’t know where to procure raw material from. Many final year students are busy preparing for various entrance exams,” said VM Phalle, training and placement officer at Veermata Jijabai Technological Instiute (VJTI). However, according to project consultants, the lack of practical exposure in engineering programmes is the main reason why students approach such consultants.

Hence, some consultants train students in various aspects of project-making, instead of giving them a readymade product.

“We conduct weekend classes and encourage the students to make their own projects instead of offering them the ready-projects right at the beginning. They are provided guidance,” said Priyesh Sonawane, founder and chief executive officer (COO) of TEAMLABS, a Thane-based firm.
