SC DENIES RELIEF TO MITRA OVER TEMPLE REMARK

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant relief to arrested defence analyst Abhijit Iyer Mitra and remarked that he made comments against Odisha’s Konark Sun Temple and the Jagannath Puri shrine that “incite religious feelings”. “We have seen your comments. Your comments incite religious feelings. How are you entitled to bail?” chief justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi asked Mitra’s counsel, who claimed his client’s life was in danger. “If your life is in danger, then what better place to stay (in) than the jail; you will be secure,” chief justice Gogoi, heading a three-judge bench that dismissed Mitra’s applicatio­n for bail, remarked.

India travel, tourism industry growth third globally: Report

NEW DELHI: The World Travel and Tourism Council in a report has said India is the world’s third best performing country in terms of growth over the past seven years in tourism’s contributi­on to GDP, internatio­nal visitor spend, domestic tourism spend and capital investment. The first two spots in the report, which analysed 185 countries, are occupied by China and USA.

Sukhbir’s cavalcade attacked in Sangrur

SANGRUR: Members of radical Sikh outfits allegedly attacked the cavalcade of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal with sticks and shoes when he was on his way to a gurdwara for a meeting in Sangrur Thursday. The attack, the Akali Dal claimed, was carried out at the behest of the Sangrur senior superinten­dent of police. The party said a man even attacked Sukhbir’s car with a kirpan.

RSS sends legal notice to TMC for ‘defaming’ it

KOLKATA: The RSS has sent a legal notice to Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee for “defaming” the organisati­on in the death of two students in a clash in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district, party sources said Thursday. The notice to Chatterjee, who is also the state education minister, is dated October 1. The TMC leadership had claimed that RSS-BJP had hatched a conspiracy to create disturbanc­es in the state.
