Vasai shops to have CCTVS facing roads

-

MUMBAI: Palghar police district has requested local traders and shopkeepers in Vasai to direct one of the CCTV cameras on their premises towards the main road in an effort to keep check on the area and curb crime.

“We have requested traders to direct one of their cameras towards the main road, so that it could help us in detecting miscreants and eventually arresting them,” said Vijaykant Sagar, additional superintendent of police (ASP), Vasai.

“With the festival season coming up, more people will come out to shop, and will trigger a rise in crime, by way of robbery, theft, chain snatching, and other street crimes,” said Sagar.

“A majority of the trading community have good resolution CCTV cameras that capture sharp footage, and hence by directing such cameras towards the main road, we could easily identify the miscreants.”

Welcoming the move, Avinash Kushe, a hotelier from Vasai said, “This will definitely reduce crime, especially eve-teasing cases and crimes against women in crowded places.”

“We had experimented with such a campaign in Akola… and now we have requested public participation in the ‘One Camera for the City’ campaign. This is the first such project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” said Sagar.

“We will carry forward the CCTV campaign to Nalla Sopara, Palghar, Boisar and other areas, where major crimes are reported.”
