FIREARMS FACTORY BUSTED IN BENGAL, 3RD IN 5 MONTHS

BERHAMPORE: Bengal police on Friday night arrested two persons and seized 24 weapons after it unearthed an illegal firearms factory in Malda district. This is the third illegal firearms factory raided by police in the past five months. Malda district police superinten­dent Arnab Ghosh said, the two persons who were arrested belonged to Bihar’s Munger district. “A team of policemen conducted a raid in a grill factory just opposite to Alipur-ii gram panchayat office. We have seized 24 illegal firearms and big quantity of materials used for making firearms. Most of these were one-shoters (crude but lethal firearms that need to be loaded after every shot). Initial questionin­g has revealed that they were engaged in making firearms at the unit for more than a month.”

ABVP sweeps Hyderabad varsity students union polls

NEW DELHI: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won all six seats in the University of Hyderabad Students Union elections, results of which were declared late Saturday. The students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamseva­k Sangh, ABVP’S candidates won the posts of president (Aarti N Nagpal), vice-president (Amit Kumar), general secretary (Dheeraj Sangoji), joint secretary (Praveen Kumar S), cultural secretary (Aravind S Kumar) and sports secretary (Nikhil Raj K). The ABVP had not won any seat in last eight years. The UOH had been in the midst of an unrest following the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula on January 17, 2016 over alleged caste-based discrimina­tion on the campus.

Jaya death: Hospital says cops told to shut CCTV

CHENNAI: The Apollo Hospital has submitted to a panel probing late J Jayalalith­aa’s death that CCTV cameras in the corridors were switched off during the former chief minister’s movement inside the premises based on instructio­ns by police. There are no CCTV cameras in treatment rooms in the hospital, be it the ICU or the CCU, in keeping with internatio­nal practices, legal manager SM Mohan Kumar told Justice A Arumughasw­amy Commission of Inquiry in an affidavit on behalf of the hospital.
