‘TV producer had been convicted in forgery case too’

- Farhan Shaikh

MUMBAI:THE MIDC police, which is investigating a cheating case of ₹1 crore against Marathi TV producer Rahul Ishwar Kapoor, on Friday informed the metropolitan court that Kapoor is, in fact ‘Yasir Dawood Khan’ who was in 2016 convicted in a forgery and cheating case involving ₹141.33 lakh. Khan had then changed his name to Kapoor, the court was told.

The police have now written to the state seeking details of the gazette recording the name change. Kapoor had been arrested earlier this month after his anticipatory bill was rejected by the Bombay high court (HC). He has now been remanded into judicial custody for two weeks.

In 2008, Khan borrowed ₹20.40 lakh from a bank to purchase a flat. A bank account was created in the name of the builder using bogus documents. Under the pretext of making the payments for the flat, money transferred to this account were diverted to Khan.

The amount went up to ₹141.33 lakh over time. Two of the 15 persons standing trial in the case, Khan and Ramesh Solia, were convicted. Shah, who had also been accused in the case, was acquitted.

Prosecutor Neeta Prasad said, “He was convicted in a similar Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case, and so we are adding section 75 of the IPC for enhanced

punishment. He took a loan from Janata Bank but failed to repay it. The bank sealed the company.”

The complainant in the latest case is a petrol pump owner Tarasingh Nagpal, who accused Kapoor and his accomplice, Kiran Shah, of cheating him of ₹1 crore. Shah allegedly told Nagpal that Kapoor’s company ‘Trinity Multitrade Company’ was facing a financial crisis. He asked Nagpal to invest the amount and promised him 25 per cent interest. Nagpal agreed and the accused put up a flat as security.

However, Nagpal later found out the flat had been sold to someone else. Kapoor’s advocate Rohini Wagh said, “The purported amount is not reflected in Kapoor’s account but in Shah’s account. The police have still not arrested Shah and not looked into the fact that the investment was made during demonetisation.”

Advocate Shreyans Mithare, representing Shah, said they will move HC for anticipatory bail.
