Thundershowers take Oct heat off Mumbaiites
AIR QUALITY IN THE CITY FELL UNDER THE ‘MODERATE’ CATEGORY, WITH AN AQI OF 154
MUMBAI: Thundershowers on Thursday evening followed a welcome drop in day temperature, below the normal mark for the first time this month, in a relief to Mumbaiites.
The weather bureau recorded 3.8mm rain in the suburbs between 8.30pm and 11.30pm and 0.2mm rain in south Mumbai between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. Many areas in the city recorded moderate showers between 8pm and 11.30pm with maximum intensity between 10.30pm and 11.30pm, the weather department said.
“Owing to the formation of the low-level circulation (weather system) off the coast of Karnataka, moisture is being pushed over the Konkan coast and southcentral Maharashtra. Heating during the day followed by moisture incursions is leading to the formation of tall clouds late in the evening or night. This process is known as convection,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department. “In such conditions, short spells of rain are witnessed, but with intense lightning and thunder,” said Hosalikar. “This is expected to continue till Friday, but a partly cloudy sky is expected on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, the day temperature on Thursday in the suburbs dropped to 33 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degree Celsius below normal, after 18 days of high temperature, ranging between 35 and 37.8 degrees Celsius. South Mumbai recorded 32.4 degrees Celsius, 0.4 degree Celsius below normal. The night temperature in south Mumbai was close to the normal mark, but it was almost two degrees Celsius above normal in the suburbs. Air quality in the city fell under the ‘moderate’ category, with an AQI of 154.
