MUMBAI: A 28-year-old drug peddler from Nigeria was arrested by the Dongri police for allegedly assaulting railway police force (RPF) officers on Wednesday night during a joint raid by RPF and the city police.

The joint force on Wednesday, raided an area in Dongri at 11pm, based on information intercepted by the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) and Byculla railway police, three months ago.

Police said during the raid, they found 10 Nigerians trying to sell drugs. “Some escaped while others began pelting stones at our officers. A Nigerian identified as Kone Anama picked up a stick and assaulted the RPF constable Salim Shaikh who suffered injuries to his head,” said Sandeep Bagdikar, senior police inspector of Dongri police station.

Authorities rescued Shaikh and arrested Anama.

“On searching Anama we found 16 grams of cocaine and 11 grams of MD . We charged him under sections of the Indian Penal Code for assaulting a government officer and under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, on Thursday morning,” said Bagdikar.

Sources said that the government railway police (GRP) and the ANC had received several calls about a large number of Nigerians allegedly selling drugs near the railway tracks at Byculla which had made the area unsafe for residents.
