SRINAGAR : The BJP has, for the first time, managed to win seats in Kashmir councils and committees in the four-phase elections to local bodies, counting for which began on Saturday. The Congress won two prominent municipal councils of Kashmir, while most of the independen­t candidates bagged seats in Srinagar Municipal Corporatio­n. Violence rocks Afghanista­n elections, at least 170 dead

KABUL: Nearly 170 Afghans were killed or wounded in poll-related violence on Saturday, officials said, as the legislativ­e election turned chaotic with many polling centres opening hours late — or not at all — due to technical glitches and lack of staff. There was no immediate claim of responsibi­lity for violence, but the Taliban said earlier it had carried out more than 300 attacks on the ‘fake election’ across the war-torn country. ››P15

Himachal govt may rename Shimla as Shyamala

SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh government is considerin­g renaming state capital Shimla to Shyamala, following a demand made by right-wing Hindu groups as part of efforts to remove “symbols of British rule”. The demand gained momentum after the Uttar Pradesh government renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj.
