BJP ahead in Jammu polls; Congress in Valley
SRINAGAR : The BJP has, for the first time, managed to win seats in Kashmir councils and committees in the four-phase elections to local bodies, counting for which began on Saturday. The Congress won two prominent municipal councils of Kashmir, while most of the independent candidates bagged seats in Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Violence rocks Afghanistan elections, at least 170 dead
KABUL: Nearly 170 Afghans were killed or wounded in poll-related violence on Saturday, officials said, as the legislative election turned chaotic with many polling centres opening hours late — or not at all — due to technical glitches and lack of staff. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for violence, but the Taliban said earlier it had carried out more than 300 attacks on the ‘fake election’ across the war-torn country. ››P15
Himachal govt may rename Shimla as Shyamala
SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh government is considering renaming state capital Shimla to Shyamala, following a demand made by right-wing Hindu groups as part of efforts to remove “symbols of British rule”. The demand gained momentum after the Uttar Pradesh government renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj.
