Pvt bus rams into stationary truck on Puneahmedn­agar highway, 5 killed

PUNE:A private bus rammed into a stationary truck on the Puneahmedn­agar highway on Monday killing five people travelling in the bus, including the driver.

According to police, 12 others suffered injuries and were moved to hospitals. One person, identified as Kishore Dhanraj Murmbe, 45, from Latur, is in intensive care in Shirur.

The driver of the bus has been identified as Shaikh Amjad Mohammad; and the deceased passengers have been identified as Pramod More, resident of Buldhana; Shaikh Altaf Abhopkar, 40 and his son Shaikh Jamir Altaf, 12, both residents of Aurangabad. The identity of the fourth passenger is yet to be ascertaine­d, police said.

The bus, belonging to Bhavana Travels, had started from Aurangabad and was heading towards Pune when the accident took place at Wadegavhan village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district. The truck, which it crashed into, had a punctured tyre and was parked on the side of the road, police said.

“The driver had taken on more passengers along the way. Therefore, identifyin­g the deceased is taking time. I spoke to Akash Baban Pharte, 20, who was sitting in the driver’s cabin. He got thrown out of the bus after it hit the truck so he survived. He said that the driver fell asleep at the wheel around 5.20am when the incident took place,” Arun Jagtap, Ahmednagar deputy superinten­dent of police said.

Sanjay Sone, police sub-inspector (PSI) of Supa police station said that of the injured, three were referred to a hospital in Pune, four to Sri Ganesh hospital in Shirur, two to Manikchand hospital in Shirur and some were discharged immediatel­y. “The injured people's relatives showed up and shifted them to private hospitals. The priority was to get them to hospitals and clear the traffic on the highway." A case was registered against the deceased bus driver at Supa police station under Parner division of Ahmednagar police under the relevants sections of the Indian Penal Code.
