COPS ON NIGHT PATROL SPOTTED THE ACCUSED AND CHASED HIM ALONG SV ROAD IN GOREGAON

MUMBAI: In a high-speed car chase straight out of a potboiler, the Goregaon police followed a Toyota Corolla for more than a kilometre on the northbound stretch of SV Road and Marve Road at 1.30am on Wednesday, before arresting the driver who had run over a man minutes before.

The accused, Rajoshi Ganguly, 25, who works as a driver and had recently purchased the second-hand car, was allegedly drunk when the police nabbed him.

Ganguly was speeding towards Kandivli when he knocked down 22-year-old Kirdhan Bhuiya, who was crossing the road near the Bata showroom on SV Road at Malad, said the police. He did not stop to help the victim, but instead fled the spot. A police patrolling team, which witnessed the accident, chased him and finally intercepted his car on the Marve Road near Orlem.

The police said Ganguly was smelling of alcohol and was subjected to a medical test. “The accused did not care to stop his car,” said Maheshkumar Thakur, police inspector (crime), Goregaon police station. “A patrolling police vehicle spotted him and chased him. He was then taken in for questioning.”

The victim’s brother, Disco Bhuiya, 20, filed a complaint on the basis of which the police registered a first information report (FIR). Ganguly was arrested and booked for drunk driving, rash driving, and causing death due to negligence under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act. He was produced before the Borivli magistrate court and sent to judicial custody.

“We have seized Ganguly’s car. Bhuiya’s body was sent to the post mortem centre at Siddharth Hospital on Wednesday and later handed over to his family,” said Vivek Lamture, the sub-inspector investigating the case.
