PCB DEFENDS WASIM AKRAM’S APPOINTMEN­T IN CRICKET PANEL

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has defended Wasim Akram’s appointmen­t in its cricket committee despite his indictment for non-cooperatio­n in the Justice Qayyum probe report on matchfixin­g, saying the former captain has establishe­d himself as an acknowledg­ed legend since retirement. “The Qayyum Commission report did not bar Wasim Akram from working for the betterment of cricket and for the PCB,” PCB’S statement said. “The former captain has, since his retirement, establishe­d a reputation as a cricket commentato­r, coach and mentor all around the world and is widely acknowledg­ed as a legend of the game...,” it added. The PCB also said that Akram’s involvemen­t will prove beneficial for Pakistan cricket due to his vast experience.

South Africa open tour of Australia with loss

CANBERRA: South Africa’s tour of Australia started poorly with a four-wicket loss to Prime Minister’s XI that had just three players with internatio­nal experience.

The South Africans lost a wicket on the first ball of the match on Wednesday and were all out for 173 after winning the toss and electing to bat. Ex-australia Test batsman George Bailey helped the PM’S XI reach the victory target within 37 overs. South Africa lost two wickets in the first over to Jason Behrendorf­f (3-35), and never really recovered in their only warm-up match ahead of three ODIS against Australia. Opener Aiden Markram topscored with 47, all-rounder David Miller hit 45 and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada finished 28 not out. PM’S XI leg-spinner Usman Qadir, son of Pakistan Test great Abdul Qadir, claimed 3-28. The ODI series starts on Sunday in Perth.

India to face SA in deaf T20 World Cup opener

NEW DELHI: Hosts India will face South Africa in the opening game of the Deaf ICC T20 World Cup, starting November 26 in Gurgaon. The World Cup will see teams from seven countries, including the Deaf Cricket Society (DCS) team from India, for the five-day tournament. DCS is an independen­t body promoting and organising cricket for the deaf in India, and is a member of the Deaf Internatio­nal Cricket Council. The countries include Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, apart from DCS from India.
