PANSARE KILLING: EXAMINE LINKS TO NALASOPARA ARMS, SAYS SIT

- HT Correspondent

MUMBAI: The special investigating team (SIT) probing rationalist Govind Pansare’s murder recently approached the special court under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, to examine the weapons seized by the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) in the Nalasopara arms haul case. Pansare was shot dead in Kolhapur in 2015.

The SIT moved an application earlier this week, claiming they needed to check the weapons and if it has any connection to the murder.

The court is scheduled to hear the plea in the coming days, once they receive a reply from the ATS.

Pansare was shot dead on February 16, 2015, at 9.25am when he and his wife, Umadevi, were taking a walk in Kolhapur. When they were near Oswal bungalow, two people arrived on a motorcycle and fired shots at them. Pansare succumbed to injuries on the spot.

The SIT arrested two accused, namely Sameer Gaikwad and Dr Virendra Tawde, who are said to be the conspirators. The two suspected shooters — Vinay Pawar and Sarang Akolkar — are still on the run.

The probe by the ATS and the Karnataka SIT, which is probing the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, have claimed that the accused arrested by the ATS and for the murder are part of the same group.

It has been alleged that the same group is responsible for the murders of Pansare, rationalists Narendra Dabholkar, and MM Kalburgi.
