Subhankar upsets Lin Dan to enter quarters in Germany
NEW DELHI: Indian shuttler Subhankar Dey stunned two-time Olympic and five-time world champion Lin Dan 22-20, 21-19 in 45 minutes to enter the men’s singles quarterfinals of the $75,000 Saarlorlux Open in Saarbrucken, Germany, on Thursday. Following his win over the Chinese top seed, world No 64 Dey will next face English seventh seed Toby Penty in the BWF Tour Super 100 tournament.
Later in the day, eighth seed Parupalli Kashyap defeate German Alexander Roovers 21-14, 21-12 in 35 minutes to also enter the last-8 where he will take on Frenchman Toma Junior Popov.
However, in men’s doubles action, Indian pairs Arun George and Sanyam Shukla, and MR Arjun and Shlok Ramchandran lost their second round matches.
EAST BENGAL BEAT LAJONG TO GO TOP
Kolkata giants East Bengal produced a second successful performance away from home, emerging 3-1 winners over Shillong Lajong and go on top of the league standings in the I-league here Thursday.
EB rode on a first-half brace by Kerala striker Jobby Justin and a second-half strike from Bidyasagar Singh to thwart a spirited Shillong side, which got one back in the second half through left wing back Rakesh Pradhan.
BANGLADESH BEAT INDIA IN SAFF U-15 SEMIS
KATHMANDU: Defending champions India crashed out in the semifinals of the SAFF U-15 Championship after suffering a loss to neighbours Bangladesh on penalties on Thursday.
India took an early lead in the first half via a long-ranger from Harsh Patre but a 93rd-minute penalty from Ashkul Rahman saw the match go past regulation time. In the end, however, Bangladesh beat India 4-2 on penalties.
