Water supply crisis: Opposition parties slam civic administration

-

Mumbai:opposition parties in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) general body slammed the civic administration over the ongoing water crisis in the city, with several areas receiving little to no water.

Corporators from all parties said they are receiving complaints from citizens regarding water shortage, low pressure or no water supply on a daily basis.

The Congress staged a walk out after the chief of the hydraulics department failed to show up for the meeting and demanded that the administration explain its stand on the issue. It has now threatened to protest outside the Mayor’s bungalow at Shivaji Park throughout if the conditions do not improve.

“The administration is unwilling declare a water cut during the festive season fearing anger from citizens. Clearly, there is less water stock and the water supply is evidently low. It is an unofficial water cut. The administration should explain its stand on the issue,”said Ravi Raja, leader of Opposition.

Meanwhile, former Member of Parliament (MP) Milind Deora met civic chief Ajoy Mehta to discuss the issues relating to water supply in south Mumbai. “I have been told that the recent work carried out between Powai and Veravali has disturbed the water supply system. There needs to be a quick solution,” Deora said.

On September 25, several areas in the western suburbs faced a 100 per cent water cut owing to work undertaken by the hydraulic department to connect a water pipeline that runs from Powai to Veravali to the main supply centre at Bhandup to Maroshi.
