MEASLES: BMC TO START VACCINATIO­N DRIVE ACROSS CITY

MUMBAI: The civic body has recorded 31 outbreaks of measles this year, against last year’s 23 such outbreaks. It will now start a vaccinatio­n campaign against rubella – one form of measles known by its reddish coloured rash — from November 27. The campaign will target immunising at least 30 lakh children aged nine months to 15 years. According to the World Health Organizati­on (WHO), a measles outbreak is when there are at least five cases reported from an area.

Only licensed hawkers may occupy streets by December

MUMBAI: In an effort to regulate hawking in the city, the BMC said it may stop illegal hawkers from setting up shop after December. The civic body also aims to approve hawking pitches and issue licences to only those hawkers whose documents have passed scrutiny. A senior civic official told HT that the BMC aims to make sure the main town vending committee (TVC) approves hawking pitches and gives licenses to all hawkers. ››P2

UK: Kids among 21 people found in refrigerat­ed lorry

LONDON: Children as young as 12 have been found among 21 people stowed inside a refrigerat­ed lorry carrying sparkling water at a British port, the BBC reported on Wednesday. The group, thought to be from Vietnam, was found by the Border Force at the port of Newhaven, south England, on Thursday, and included 15 children. A criminal investigat­ion is underway, and a Romanian man, thought to be the driver, has been charged with assisting unlawful entry. ››P14

Indian Railways helpline gets a GPS upgrade

MUMBAI: To step up passenger safety on board local and outstation trains, the Indian Railways has upgraded its security helpline, 182. Now enabled with the GPS (Global Positionin­g System), the helpline will aid railway personnel track the location of the complainan­t, and alert the nearest guards. ››P5

Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft be lifted immediatel­y, the governing body’s CEO Kevin Roberts said on Wednesday. Cricket Australia has come under pressure from the Australian Cricketers’ Associatio­n (ACA) to end the bans following the release of Longstaff review, which laid some of the blame on the board. ››P16
