NEWDELHI: Delhi Home minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday directed the additional chief secretary to lodge a police complaint against BJP Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari for allegedly indulging in violence during the inauguration of the Signature Bridge on Sunday.

However, hours after receiving the note, the senior bureaucratic officer said the Home department would only forward the minister’s note to the police, and not lodge a complaint.

In a note to additional chief secretary Manoj Parida, Jain said Tiwari and his associates indulged in “hooliganism” to “overawe” the highest functionaries of the government.

Tiwari had gone to the event to protest as he was allegedly not invited to the inauguration ceremony despite being a Member of Parliament from the area.

The minister also sent a CD — purportedly of video recordings of the alleged ruckus at the event, which the AAP and the Delhi government claim turned violent — to Parida.

“Manoj Tiwari and his associates formed unlawful assembly, forcibly entered (reached the) dias with the intention to attack and harm the chief minister and (his) council of ministers and create(d) ruckus, obstructed public servants in discharge of their duties, threatened public servants with injury, rioting and threatened them with consequences,” read Jain’s note.

Parida, who also holds the charge of principal secretary (Home), refused to file any complaint, saying the Home department had nothing to do with the event held on Sunday.

“The event was organised by the tourism department. So, if any action needs to be taken, it has to be done by that department. Also, an FIR can be registered by any victim or anyone who witnessed the alleged violence. The Home department will only forward the minister’s note to the police,” he said. Meanwhile, AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh wrote to Delhi Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik, asking him why no action had been taken against Tiwari and his workers yet. He said AAP would raise the issue during the upcoming winter session.
