MUMBAI: Mild tremors were reported from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Sunday evening.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale with the epicentre at Palghar district (north of Mumbai) with latitude 19.9 degrees north and longitude 73 degrees east at a depth of 10km was recorded at 6.25pm.

The IMD said that tremors were felt in nearby areas of Thane, Valsad, Nashik, Navsari, and as far as Silvasa in Gujarat.

As many as 20 villages across Dahanu and Talasari reported tremors that lasted for a few seconds. “We experienced minor shakes and the floor began to move and we panicked. Cracks were seen on doors and mud walls of our houses,” said Suresh Walvi a resident of Talasari.

“Villagers rushed out of their houses in panic. Wall clocks, articles in shops, and utensils fell from shelves due to the tremors,” said Suresh Kate another resident.

On November 3, similar tremors were felt in many villages of the region, added Kate.

The Palghar district administration confirmed that there was an earthquake but was awaiting the seismic report from the IMD.

In January too, around 176 houses developed cracks in Jawhar and Vikramgadh talukas in Palghar when an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was recorded by the Met department.

Similar mild tremors were recorded on December 20 and 25 in the same region.
