Day temperature falls, expect further dip
MUMBAI : The day temperatures dropped significantly on Tuesday, paving way for cool conditions during the evening, with the city recording its lowest day temperature for the season so far.
The Santacruz weather station recorded 32.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 1.1 degrees Celsius below normal. On Monday, the weather station had recorded 35.4 degrees Celsius.
Likewise, Colaba recorded 32.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 0.7 degree Celsius below normal, a significant fall in the day temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The city could also expect cool early morning conditions in the coming days, as today’s minimum temperature is expected to be 19 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature for Thursday is expected to be 18 degrees Celsius, the weather bureau said.
The bureau also stated that the sea breeze set in early on Tuesday, leading to the temperature drop.
KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD), said, “We have not officially declared winter yet. However, owing to the change in wind patterns, which is the normal phenomenon during this time, the day temperature has fallen. We expect this pattern to continue for the next few days.”
The IMD said that the city is experiencing easterly to southeasterly winds during the day, which are shifting to cooler winds from the sea by the evening.
“A weather system over the south interior Karnataka region is aiding this shift,” Hosalikar said.
While the day temperature was the lowest for the season, it did not break any records. The lowest November day temperature in 10 years was recorded on November 12, 2009 at 25.1 degrees Celsius, followed by 30.8 degrees Celsius on November 26 the next year.
The night temperature on Tuesday was similar to that of Monday, as Santacruz recorded 20 degrees Celsius, which was 1.5 degree Celsius below normal, and Colaba recorded 24.5 degrees Celsius, 0.3 degree Celsius above normal.
Meanwhile, the city also witnessed lower pollution levels after very poor air quality during Diwali last week. The air quality index (AQI) on Tuesday was 180, falling under the ‘moderate’ category and is expected to be 177 today, which is also under the moderate category.
