FIVE ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING CIVIC OFFICIALS

KALYAN: The Khadakpada police have arrested five people from Umbarde village in Kalyan on Thursday for allegedly assaulting three offiicals of the Kalyandomb­ivli Municipal Corpration, two Maharashtr­a Jeevan Pradhikara­n (MJP) engineers and two private contract employees, who had been to survey a site for the sewage treatment plant project in the village on Wednesday. Meanwhile, civic officials’ union who were on a protest against the incident, withdrew the strike after the arrests. Police are on the lookout for five others who were involved in the assault.

Vasai civic bus runs over four buffaloes, two dead

VASAI: A civic bus on Thursday ran over four buffaloes in Vasai, killing two and injuring the other two. One of the injured buffaloes is pregnant, said police. A case of accidental death has been registered by the police. The incident took place near a car showroom at Papdi when the bus was on its way to the Vasai Road railway station. Hemant Katkar, spokesman, Palghar police, said they are now trying to identify the owner of the animals.

72yrold retd govt official was murdered say cops

MUMBAI: The Manor police have registered a case of murder against unknown persons after a 72-year-old retired resident tehsildar was shot four times in the head with his licenced revolver on Wednesday morning. A senior police officer said that the post-mortem report from the JJ Hospital confirmed the death was due to firing. Pandarinat­h Kaliram Sankhe, 72, a retired government official was shot at his bungalow in Maswan on Wednesday at 6.30am.
