DEVELOPMENT HITS THE EAST COAST

-

Mumbai Port Trust is working on projects to revamp lesser developed part of the coastline

WHAT IS THE EASTERN WATERFRONT PLAN?

The Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT) is planning to give the city's eastern waterfront a complete revamp. One of the key features of the plan includes a second Marine Drive for Mumbai between Mazagaon Docks and Wadala.

The plan consists of a marina, public parks, restaurants, jogging and walking pathways, and cycling tracks

WHAT WOULD THE CITY GET?

A new coastline: Of the land the Port Trust occupies, a major section of it would be opened up for public use. Mumbai would get a promenade twice the size of Marine Drive on the eastern coast

Open spaces: With the open spaces in the city shrinking, the development of Trust land could give Mumbai vast green spaces. MBPT has planned a central garden five times the size of Oval Maidan Water Transport: MBPT has planned to have water transport terminals as part of the plan which can help unburden the suburban rail network and provide alternative transportation modes

Restoration of heritage structures: The area has a lot of heritage structures and the development plan includes protection, delineation, and restoration of heritage sites on port land including Sassoon Docks, Apollo Bunder, Ballard Estate, Radio Club, Sewri Fort, etc.
