MAHOUT’S BODY FOUND IN ZOO, AUTOPSY AWAITED

RANCHI: A 51-year-old mahout was allegedly killed by an elephant, Ramu, at Birsa Zoo on Sunday. Zoo director Sunil Kumar Gupta said, “The actual reason of his death could be ascertaine­d only after post-mortem report. But possibilit­y of the elephant throwing the mahout off its back and striking him with trunk cannot be ruled out. The incident took place around 8.30 am.” Victim Mahendra Singh was taken to Medanta Hospital at Irba where he was declared brought dead. Gupta, however, said no external injury was visible on his body.

55yearold lynched for ‘practising’ black magic

GUWAHATI: A 55-year-old man was lynched by a mob after being branded as a wizard in Assam. Police said they have arrested 19 people for their alleged involvemen­t in the incident. The incident happened late evening on Saturday in Disobai area of Karbi Anglong, police said, adding, the villagers followed victim Sochen Teron before they lynched him. “The villagers branded him a wizard,” said Sivaprasad Ganjala, superinten­dent of police, Karbi Anglong. “We have arrested 19 people including two village headmen,” Baruati said.
