Ola-uber drivers call off protest after meeting CM
MUMBAI: The drivers of the appbased cab companies, Ola and Uber, called off their agitation on Monday after the members of the workers’ unions representing them, met chief minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis and put forth their demands.
However, the Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh (MRRKS) and Marathi Kamgar Sena stated that if the state fails to give a positive response on their demands, they will again resort to agitation.
“We suspended the agitation after meeting the CM. We requested him to hold a meeting of all the stakeholders, including the companies and the representatives of the drivers. The CM assured us that such a meeting will take place after the winter session of the legislative Assembly. However, if there is no positive response to our demands, we will continue our agitation,” said Sachin Ahir, president of MRRKS and senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
The union said the state will form a committee to look into the demands of the drivers. The drivers are demanding higher income, among other things. The committee’s report will be taken into consideration and its suggestions will be implemented accordingly. “The committee will also speak to the companies and get their opinion as well,” said Govind Mohite, general secretary, MRRKS.
On Monday morning, the union had held a protest rally from Bharatmata Cinema in Currey Road to the Vidhan Bhavan. The police took them to Azad Maidan, from where the protest was then held.
