friends would receive discounts on drinks and snacks, and I was making more friends,” he says.

Social media campaigning does help students figure out if this is the kind of career they would like to pursue, says Rommani Sen Shitak, coordinator and BMM professor at KPB Hinduja college.

“What they should also keep in mind is that they must not get carried away by big names and end up wasting time.”

There is so much demand for student influencers — partly because they reach a key demographic, and partly because they are often happy to work for perks rather than pay — that apps and websites that started out as platforms for those seeking internships are now adding sections where they can connect brands with college influencers.

“We were initially focused only on providing internships to students. But the pattern shifted to companies seeking students for campaigns,” says Armaan Vananchal, co-founder of Frapp, one such platform.

Pranay Swarup, founder of Chtrbox, agrees. “We identify students with good communication and marketing skills, they must be good storytellers online, should create unique content in different formats such as Instagram stories, Facebook posts and video reviews,” he says.

“This is just a new strategy for brands on college campuses,” says Lakshmi Lingam, professor at School of Media and Cultural Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

“But what is missing in most cases is the involvement of the college administration. The college management must get to take a call on which brands can be associated with students.

“The same rules that apply to sponsorships and promotional activities on college campus should apply. It is about which brands enter a campus and the way they approach students,” adds Lingam. The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, one of the premier B-schools in India and the first IIM to be set up, in 1961, has concluded its summer placements for the class of 2020 with more than 120 companies participating in the process.

Summer Internship is a mandatory part of the curriculum of the flagship PGDM course at Iim-calcutta that allows students to gain an exposure to various opportunities in corporate world before making a final career decision.

The notable aspect of the summer internship recruitments is the mentoring from second-year students in the months prior to this process.

The campus saw 100% of candidates being recruited in a little over two days.there were 458 candidates who had opted for summer internships in the 55th batch (Class of 2020).

IIM Calcutta retained its crown as the finance campus of India with the highest number of offers (26%) coming from the banking and financial services domain.

Citibank was the largest recruiter in this sector. Other prominent names recruiting from the campus were Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs among others.

The consulting sector continued to demonstrate its confidence in recruiting from this management institute, with more than 100 (a total of 22%) accepted offers during the placement process.

Boston Consulting Group was the largest recruiter in the sector, with other notable firms such as Mckinsey & Co, Bain & Co, AT Kearney and Alvarez & Marsal making offers too.

The campus saw a strong preference from FMCG majors such as Hindustan Unilever, Procter & Gamble, ITC, RB, Colgate Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson, among others.
