PETROVA BARRED FOR CORRUPTION CHARGE

- Abhishek Paul

NEWDELHI: A day after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) suspended the accreditation of Bulgarian coach Petar Yosifov Lesov, the world body has cancelled the accreditation of 57 kg boxer Stanimira Petrova. Stanimira, after losing her pre-quarterfinal bout against India’s

Sonia Chahal on Monday, had accused the judges of corruption.

“It’s corruption by judges, not a fair result,” said the European champ after suffering a 3:2 loss. Her coach Lesov had thrown a bottle and gestured at the crowd in frustration, for which his accreditation had been cancelled.

“Stanimira Petrova has shown inappropriate behaviour at the conclusion of her participation in the event. After 197 bouts in five days conducted under the highest standards of level-playing field, Ms Petrova has made false and misleading statements regarding the AIBA officials.

In doing so she has disrespected her opponent, the judges, the referee, the event organisers and AIBA,” said AIBA executive director

Tom Virgets.

Virgets added that the allegation was not supported by any proof from Petrova.

“We must also change the culture of our coaches and athletes who have been taught it is acceptable to yell corruption ‘without providing evidence,” he said.
