Floersch vows to return after injury

MACAU: German Formula Three driver Sophia Floersch, who fractured her spine in an aerial crash at the Macau Grand Prix on Sunday, reassured fans on Tuesday that she was recovering well and vowed to return to the sport.

Her Van Amersfoort Racing team said on Monday that doctors had ruled out fear of paralysis.

“I’m going to come back,” Floersch said on Facebook.

“I survived the operation which took 11 hours. Hope from now on it only gets better. I have to stay a few more days in Macau until I’m transporta­ble. I want to thank all of my fans for every single get-well wishes, which I now start reading. This really motivates me and gives me courage.”

KIPCHOGE, MAYER FOR IAAF TOP AWARD

PARIS: The world’s fastest marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge and world decathlon record holder Kevin Mayer are among five nominees for the IAAF’S male Athlete of the Year, the federation announced on Tuesday.

The Kenyan and Frenchman are joined on the shortlist by the quickest person over 60m indoors American Christian Coleman, European pole-vault champion Armand Duplantis from Sweden and Asian Games 400m hurdles champion in Qatar’s Abderrahma­n Samba.

The contenders for the women’s prize were announced a day earlier with Kenya’s 3000m steeplecha­se world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, 100m European champion in Great Britain’s Dina Asher-smith, Colombia’s Diamond League long and triple jump title holder Caterine Ibarguen, the Bahamas’ 200m Diamond League gold-medallist Shaunae Miller-uibo and European heptathlon champion in Belgian Nafissatou Thiam all included.

‘OLYMPIC MINDSET AIDED RECOVERY’

LONDON: Sprint great Michael Johnson said that his “Olympic mindset” had helped speed up his recovery from a mini stroke that the 51-year-old suffered earlier this year.

“I knew then the recovery was going to be down to hard work, focus and commitment to the process. That is something I am very familiar with. Almost three months on now from the stroke and I am pretty much back to normal and back to work,” Johnson told the BBC. “For the next few weeks I went back into an Olympic mindset and focusing on having the best training session I can today and using it to be better and get better.”
