MAN HELD AFTER TEEN NARRATES HER ‘BAD TOUCH’ EXPERIENCE

- Aritra Hazra

MUMBAI: The Versova police on Tuesday arrested a 36-year-old man after a 13-year-old girl spoke about her experience of bad touch during a ‘Police Didi’ session in a municipal school, in DN Nagar.

Police Didi, a campaign by the Mumbai police, includes a series of visits by police officers to schools, to sensitise children about ‘good touch and bad touch’.

“When a team of police officers from DN Nagar was educating Class 8 students, a girl stood up and said that her neighbour had called her to his residence and touched her inappropriately,” said a police officer, who was present at the session.

The officers then spoke to the girl separately and noted details. She told police that the man used to call her under the pretext of having some work and touch her inappropriately.

After taking details of her residence in Versova, the DN Nagar police informed the Versova police station officers.

“After the Versova police were informed, a team was sent to the locality. The man, 36, was tracked down and arrested. A case has been registered under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” said the police officer.

The police are looking at this case as a success of the ‘Police Didi’ campaign. “Many a times, children do not understand the difference between good touch and bad touch. We will be continuing our efforts to educate more students,” he said.
