MUMBAI: The JJ Marg police arrested a 25-year-old woman for kidnappinganine-month-oldgirl from the Eid-e-milad fair in Bhendi Bazaar on Wednesday.

According to police, the accused, Nabila Mansuri, had three miscarriages in the past and wanted a child.

On Wednesday night, Nasrin Khan, 26, along with her daughters, Aqsa (5) and Gulbasa (9 months), went to Bhendi Bazaar to see the fair. She was accompanied by her sister-in-law and other family members.

“Around 8.30pm, Khan and her children got separated from rest of the family. She sat down on the footpath as she felt uneasy and was calling her brother, when Mansuri approached her,” said Shirish Gaikwad, senior inspector of JJ Marg.

Mansuri told Khan that some people were distributing niyaz (food distributed during Eid) in a nearby building. She asked Khan to go and eat something, while she would take care of her ninemonth old daughter till she returned, Gaikwad said. However, when Khan returned to the spot, she saw that her daughter and Mansuri were missing. Khan then contacted her brother and filed a complaint with the JJ Marg police station, and a case of kidnapping was registered. While Khan helped the police in making a sketch of Mansuri, the police scanned CCTV cameras in the area and also looked at major junctions and railway stations. The police then spotted a woman matching Khan’s description. She had a child and was heading towards Null Bazaar.

On Thursday night, the police arrested Mansuri and rescued Gulbasa, who was returned to her mother. “Mansuri was booked under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” said Gaikwad.
