BJP to replace Left’s ‘political syllabus’ with NCERT in Tripura

- Priyanka Deb Barman

AGARTALA: The Tripura's BJPIPFT government on Friday announced that it will replace the 'politics-related’ TBSE syllabus, approved during the erstwhile Left government, with NCERT from the next academic session.

State education minister Ratan Lal Nath made the announcement on the first day of the three-day Winter Assembly Session. The decision comes days after Class X students of Srirampur Suryamani Memorial Higher Secondary School in Kailasahar were asked to write a short note on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) will be replaced with the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) syllabus students at the secondary and higher secondary level, said Nath.

“Initially, I had a thought to take action against the concerned teacher.but after I went through the book and found there is a chapter mentioning about different political parties including CPI (M), Congress and also BJP. That means, the question was set based on the syllabus that was approved by Tripura Board of Secondary Education in the earlier Left government," he said.

He also criticised the CPI (M) its statement that the BJP, after coming to power, was trying to “saffronise” the education system. While showing the social science textbook to the House, the minister pointed out some terms like 'rigging', 'booth capturing', Left Front's coming to power for the first time in 1978 mentioned in the book and claimed the book has some wrong information.

Agartala Municipal Council was upgraded as municipal corporation with increase in wards to 49 from 35 in 2014. But the book, published in 2016, mentioned that AMC had 35 wards, and also termed Left Front as a 'party', he said. “The former government had coloured the education system in red. Above all, they are giving false information to students. What will be the future of students then? And from next academic year, we will start NCERT syllabus in school," he said.
