Wenger among replacements for Bayern’s Kovac?

MUMBAI: Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly interested in taking up the managerial role with German football giants Bayern Munich, as the 69-year-old is not interested in returning to the Premier League in such capacity.

Wenger, who remained at the helm at Arsenal for 22 years, does not want to be a part of any English club, and at the same time Bayern Munich are contemplating over a replacement for the incumbent Croatian manager Nico Kovac.

According to The Telegraph, reports in the German media have stated that Bayern Munich board is currently discussing over the replacement for Kovac, who has struggled in his role at the club after a blistering start to the campaign, which saw the team score 19 goals in its opening seven games — all in wins — including the German Supercup win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

The latest blow to Bayern and Kovac was their 3-3 draw against Fortuna Dusseldorf, especially after they let go a strong 3-1 lead. Bayern are currently placed fifth in the Bundesliga, nine points behind the leaders Borussia Dortmund.

The Week claimed that this is their ‘worst start’ to a league season since 1994-95, and a ‘change is required according to the German media’.

Wenger is said to have turned down several consultancy roles since he wants to ‘end his legendary career with more silverware’ as well as compete at the top level, reported The Daily Express.

“I believe that [I’ll] start again on 1 January. Thanks to my 22 years at Arsenal, I have big experience on different levels. There are enquiries from all over the world,” Wenger said recently. However, Arsenal’s improved performances — currently placed fifth in the Premier League points table with eight wins in 13 games and 27 points — may not work in favour of their former manager.

Earlier this month, Wenger, who was also linked with Paris Saint-germain for a technical director role, rejected an opportunity with Fulham as he remained adamant on mentoring a non-premier League side.

At Bayern, Wenger is not expected to face language barriers as he is fluent in German.
