INFLATED POWER BILLS: MERC ASKS FIRM FOR MORE DOCUS

- Tanushree Venkatraman

MUMBAI: A day after seeking explanation from the Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) over complaints of hike in power bills, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) on Wednesday asked the firm to submit additional documents.

On Tuesday, in a notice to AEML, MERC had sought an explanation within 24 hours on complaints of increased electricity bills.

However, both AEML and MERC did not share details of the report submitted on Wednesday.

Dr Rajendra Ambekar, MERC’S executive director, said, “The commission had a meeting with the representatives of the company on Wednesday. We have asked for additional data to be submitted on Thursday.”

An AEML spokesperson said, “The Hon’ble MERC has sought additional information which we will be submitting tomorrow.”

Political parties like Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been alleging that Adani customers are getting ‘inflated’ bills after the company took over from Reliance Energy this year.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Congress on Wednesday wrote to Maharashtra governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao demanding a probe into the working of MERC.

In his letter, Sanjay Nirupam, Mumbai Congress unit chief, wrote, “MERC and AEML are hand-in-glove and they are colluding to hoodwink the general public by issuing misleading statements from time to time.”
