Woman found with throat slit on train in Dadar, police hunt for clues

- HT Correspondent

MUMBAI: Cleaning staff who entered a long-distance train that arrived in Dadar on Friday afternoon found the body of a 40-year-old woman with her throat slit in the ladies compartment. The police suspect robbery as they found no jewellery on the woman.

The Bhuj Express arrived in the city from Surat at 12.10pm on Friday. The cleaning staff told the police they found the woman, Dadiya Devi Shankar Chowdhary, when they entered the empty compartment.

“The woman seemed to have been alone in the compartment when she was attacked, as the cleaning staff said the woman had lost a lot of blood,” said Shailendra Dhivar, a Government Railway Police officer.

The police registered a case of murder against unknown assailants. Dhivar said Chowdhary had boarded the ladies’ general compartment from the Surat station.

She was alone, and on her way to Mumbai to meet her sister who stays in Dadar.

Dhivar said Chowdhary is survived by her husband, a salesman at a garment shop, and three children — two daughters in college, and a son studying medicine in Surat.

“We did not find any jewellery on the woman, but her luggage is untouched. We suspect the motive of the murder was robbery,” Dhivar said.

“We are waiting for the family to come to find out whether the woman was alone all the way or whether she was carrying any jewellery,” added Dhivar.
