Drama in Serie A as Fiorentina draw 3-3
MILAN: Serie A’s remarkable weekend of dramatic finishes continued on Sunday as Fiorentina equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage time to draw 3-3 at Sassuolo after trailing 3-1.
The six goals all came in the last half hour of a remarkable game as did two sendings-off, one for each side.
Earlier Cagliari held AS Roma to 2-2 draw with a 95th-minute goal, despite being down to nine men while Sampdoria scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time — the latest goal in Serie A history — to draw 2-2 at Lazio.
Alfred Duncan blasted Sassuolo ahead in the 62nd minute and the Ghanaian midfielder set up the second for Khouma Babacar five minutes later.
Fiorentina, without a win in their last seven league games, pulled one back in the 70th minute through Giovanni Simeone.
Stefano Sensi restored Sassuolo’s two-goal lead with a swerving long-range shot.
Marco Benassi pulled another goal back for Fiorentina in the 89th minute before Kevin Mirallas scored with a spectacular angled shot in the 96th minute to help his side pull off a nail-biting 3-3 draw.
DECISION IN MARCH ON 48-TEAM WC: INFANTINO
PARIS: Gianni Infantino reiterated that FIFA will decide in March whether the 2022 World Cup (WC) could be extended to include 48 teams but conceded it was not a simple decision.
Thirty-two teams contested this year’s WC in Russia, widely feted as one of the most entertaining editions of the modern era. Although FIFA is intent on 48-team future editions of the World Cup from 2026, a decision on Qatar won’t be known until next year. “We’ll decide in March,” Infantino said.
