COUNCILLORS HIT OUT AT BMC OVER WATER SHORTAGE

- HT Correspondent

MUMBAI: Councillors of the standing committee on Wednesday lashed out at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for “acute” water shortage across the city. They said that although there is official 10% water cut, citizens are facing acute water shortage, more than 10%. Civic officials have now promised to visit the places with most complaints and find a solution.

“Even though there is no cut in the intake of water from the source, there is an acute shortage of water being supplied. Where is the water going?” said Ravi Raja, leader of Opposition in the BMC.

Meanwhile, Makarand Narvekar, BJP councillor from Fort area, said that although A-ward is a VIP ward, there is a water shortage. Citizens have also been complaining about societies using boosters to pull in extra water, thus disturbing the even water supply. “Earlier, we used to get water for four to five hours, which has now been reduced to two hours. The nearby society is using boosters, which is reducing our supply even more,” said Amrita Ganguly, a resident from Goregaon.

Andheri has been fighting water shortage for a year now. “Earlier it was said due to the work at the Powai-veravalli surface pipeline, there was a problem in water supply and now the 10% water cut is up to 50% in some areas. BMC only diverts water from one area to another, which is not the solution,” said BJP’S Abhijeet Samant. Ashok Tawadia, chief engineer of the hydraulics department said he would visit these areas and find a solution. “The water stock in the source is at least 15% less than what it was last year.”
