2 e-challan machines each for 92 police stations in Mumbai

-

MUMBAI: As a first step against traffic offenders, 92 police stations across the city have now been provided with two e-challan machines each to prosecute and impose fines on traffic offenders on the spot. Earlier, only traffic police personnel used to carry e-challan machines that not only generates receipts, but forwards the details of the violator (including photograph and driving license details) to the control room.

“Given the enormity of the problem, the police stations will act as force multipliers for the traffic police with the use of e-challan machines,” joint commissioner of police, law and order, Deven Bharti said.

Bharti said the police stations will act against all sorts of traffic violations—from illegal park- ing, rash driving, helmetless/ drink driving to refusal to ply by autos and taxis.

“The violators will be imposed fine on the spot,” he said.

Apart from independently penalising traffic offenders, police stations will continue to provide additional manpower to the traffic police as and when required, Bharti said.

Meanwhile, the traffic police too have come out with a Whatsapp number (8454999999) where citizens can lodge complaint against errant taxi/autos.

Last week, a viral video of an autorickshaw driver slapping a commuter over fares at BKC had evoked sharp reactions by netizens, prompting quick action by the police.
