SC SAYS NO TO DHINAKARAN COOKER SYMBOL

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Thursday refused to grant for now the ‘pressure cooker’ symbol to TTV Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) but allowed the Election Commission to decide the issue as per a 2018 Delhi High Court order. A bench of justices AM Khanwilkar and Ajay Rastogi said since the matter was pending before the high court for final adjudicati­on, there was no just reason as to why the interim arrangemen­t of allotting ‘pressure cooker’ symbol by the poll panel ought not continue. “The judgment is a clear victory for us. The operative portion is very clear on allotment of cooker symbol to us,” said Raja Senthoor Pandiayan, counsel for Dhinakaran.

Army grenade explodes in Ayodhya, two dead

LUCKNOW: A woman and her son were killed and two children seriously injured in Ayodhya after an army grenade exploded near their firing range in Cantonment area of the city on Thursday. The ‘unexploded’ grenade, used during army exercise, was picked up by children and it exploded when they removed its safety pin. The deceased have been identified as Reena, 30, and her son Raj, 8, while, Atul, 6, and Manju, 6, were seriously injured in the blast. Cantonment police station in charge RK Rana said the blast took place at around 3.30 pm when the children were playing with the grenade. He added that kids often collected shells of used explosives from near the firing range in the area.

Murder accused deported from the UAE

NEW DELHI: A 36-year-old man who was wanted in alleged murder cases by the Punjab Police and has a red corner notice against him was deported from the UAE on Thursday, officials said. Prabhjot Singh was wanted in two cases of attempt to murder and murder, registered in 2017, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. A red corner notice was issued against the 36-year old Singh on the request of the Punjab Police on December 19, 2017. He was arrested in the UAE with the help of Interpol, the UAE and the CBI, they said.

Man gets death sentence for rape and murder

CHHATARPUR: A special court in Madhya Pradesh has awarded death sentence to a 25-year-old man for raping and killing an elderly woman. Special judge Naurin Nigam pronounced the sentence to the accused, Akhbar Khan, on Wednesday. Khan had raped the 75-year-old woman when she was alone at her home in Chhatarpur city on February 21, 2017. When she tried to resist his move, he inflicted injuries to her private parts following which she died on February 28, Madhya Pradesh Director General, Prosecutio­n, Rajendra Kumar, said.the accused was nailed on the basis of samples collected from the woman’s body which matched with the samples of the clothes worn by the accused while committing the crime.

India, Nepal begin talks on reviewing treaties

KATHMANDU: In the wake of Beijing’s nod to Nepal to use its sea ports for trade, senior officials from India and Nepal are meeting in Pokhara here to discuss an amendment of the bilateral Trade and Transit Treaties. Other issues discussed will pertain commerce, transit, waiving customs duty of Nepali agricultur­e products for easy access in Indian market, illegal trade, conducting inland waterways from Indian sea ports to Nepal via two rivers, Nepal officials said. “The meeting would explore the ways to reduce the huge trade deficit between the two countries, discussing whether to amend the bilateral treaties as per the need of time or deal the issues through a new way,” said Rabi Shankar Saiji who is leading the Nepali delegation in the meeting.
