JOURNALIST­S AMONG 10 BOOKED FOR SHELTERING MILITANTS IN VALLEY

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday filed charge sheet against journalist Asif Sultan and nine other persons, including a woman, for harbouring militants and giving support to a militant outfits in killing a policeman at Batamaloo area last year. Police officials said that a charge sheet was submitted in the case registered at police station Batamaloo against Sultan and other accused. According to the state police, the case pertains to the incident of last year when militants hiding at a residence in Diyarwani area of Srinagar fled away from the spot after indiscrimi­nately firing at a police party in which constable Parvaiz Ahmad was killed. “The charge sheet has been filed for their role in hatching criminal conspiracy for terrorist act, harbouring terrorist and giving support to the proscribed organisati­on,” a police spokespers­on said, requesting anonymity.

10 cops feared trapped after avalanche in Valley

SRINAGAR: At least 10 policemen were feared trapped inside their post after an avalanche struck Kulgam district near the Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-jammu National Highway on Thursday evening, police said. The avalanche hit the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel on the Qazigund side, a police official said. “Police rescue teams and other concerned agencies have been rushed to the site,” he added. The Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishm­ent has issued an avalanche warning of varying degrees to 16 of the 22 districts in Jammu and Kashmir for the next 24 hours.

Oppn questions govt on faculty reservatio­n issue

NEW DELHI: Opposition parties on Thursday raised the issue of faculty reservatio­n in universiti­es in the Rajya Sabha. The Upper House saw its first adjournmen­t in the morning when the House met as opposition parties including Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) raised the matter. ”We are fully committed towards reservatio­n. We will ensure they are not affected,” HRD minister Prakash Javadekar asserted.

Rajya Sabha TV’S Youtube subscripti­on hits a high

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha Television’s (RSTV) Youtube channel subscripti­on crossed the 2 million mark and emerged as the sixth fastest expanding channel. Adding around 4,000 subscriber­s a day, the channel has acquired over one million Youtube subscriber­s in less than eight months, RSTV said.

With over 4 lakh subscriber­s in August 2017, it acquired over 15 lakh subscriber­s in the last one and a half years to register 470% increase in the viewer base.

Javadekar: Surprised by deluge of transfer request

NEW DELHI: HRD minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday expressed surprise at the number of requests and recommenda­tions he received related to transfers of Kendriya Vidyalaya teachers. “I have never given a legal notice to anyone at the political influence that is attempted. Sometime I wonder at the number of letters I receive. I am the minister for education. But nobody asks me about policy. They are all related to transfers,” Javadekar said. The minister said the transfers were decided according to a formula.
