MUMBAI: The family of a twoyear-old boy gave a new lease of life to four by donating his heart, kidneys, liver and eyes, after the child was pronounced braindead on Sunday.

Doctors claimed the child is the youngest organ donor from Mumbai, stating the record was previously held by seven-yearold Deyaan Udani, whose family donated his organs in February 2016.

The infant, Yuvan Prabhu, was admitted to Bombay Hospital on February 4 for a congenital neurological disorder but his health started deteriorating during treatment.

Dr Sagar Sakhle, the spokesperson for the hospital informed his family on February 9 of his brain stem death.

“The family readily agreed to donate the organs. Doctors performed two sleep-apnea tests to certify the infant was brain-dead on Sunday morning,” Sakhle said.

“We immediately contacted the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee and through the national network, suitable organ recipients were found.”

The infant’s heart was transported to a private hospital in Chennai, while his kidneys were donated to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra and Global Hospital in Parel. His liver was donated to Jupiter Hospital in Thane. All recipients were young patients suffering from end-stage organ failure.
