MUMBAI : The Gamdevi police on Saturday arrested a 28-year-old Pune resident who siphoned ₹2.9 lakh from a south Mumbai-based doctor’s private bank account.

The accused, identified as Bipin Mahato, called the complainant and posed as a bank executive. Mahato asked the complainant for his 10-digit card number.after the doctor gave the accused the 10-digit number, he was told he would receive a message containing a link. The accused told him to copy the link and send it back to the number he received it from. This would authorise the complainant to use the mobile banking app, the accused told him.

On following the instructions, the complainant received alerts about four transactions - of ₹40,000, ₹50,000 and two of ₹1 lakh each - made from his account.

“Ware still trying to find out how Mahato managed to siphon the money from the account,” said a police officer.
