44 LAW STUDENTS TOLD TO PAY ₹10K FOR FAILING TO REGISTER ONLINE

-

MUMBAI: A Borivli law college imposed a fine of ₹10,000 each on 44 students for failing to register themselves on the University of Mumbai’s (MU) pre-enrollment registration portal before the deadline. The college claimed it did so as per the university’s directives.

The students, however, said that the university had given no such instruction.

However, an official from the university, on request of anonymity, said no penalty was imposed on any student in the current academic year. “We have not asked any college to charge any penalty. Borivli college has not submitted the documents of any students admitted in 2018-19, despite reminders,” she said.

The notice, issued by the principal of the college, also threatened the students with the cancellation of their admission. “It is observed that the students do not come to the college for attending classes and do not see the notice boards... The concerned students are advised to meet [the principal] immediately, failing which their admission is likely to be cancelled,” read the notice.

HT couldn’t reach the principal for a comment.

A student from the college, requesting anonymity, said that they were unable to register themselves as the university portal was working erratically. “Every time we attempted to register, the web page will shut down,” he said. MUSAB QAZI
