Wanders, Hassan set 5km world records
MONACO: Julien Wanders and Sifan Hassan won the inaugural 5 kilometre Herculis in Monaco on Sunday and claimed the official male and female world records respectively.
The distance has only been recognised as a world record event by the governing IAAF since January last year with previous faster times described as ‘unofficial world bests’.
Fresh from taking the European half marathon record from Mo Farah last week, Swiss Wanders’ time of 13:29 bettered the former world record by a second. Dutch Hassan crossed the finish line in a time of 14:44, beating the previous best set by American Sarah Pagano at 15:48.
SANTA CRUZ KEEPS FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
LOS ANGELES: Mexico’s Leo Santa Cruz defended his World Boxing Association featherweight title, dominating compatriot Rafael Rivera to win by unanimous 12-round decision.
All three judges gave Santa Cruz the win by scores of 119-109 as he improved to 36-1-1, marking the third defense in his second reign in the division.
THUNDER’S DIALLO WINS NBA DUNK CROWN
LOS ANGELES: Oklahoma City Thunder guard Hamidou Diallo used NBA great Shaquille O’neal as a prop to record a perfect score and capture the NBA Slam Dunk title on Saturday.
The high-flying rookie put out a call over the loudspeaker for the “biggest person in the building” and out strolled the 7-foot-1 O’neal who is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the league.
