THANE: A 75-year-old woman died after she was run over by a Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) bus on Monday. The incident took place while she was walking along Thane Healthcare Centre at Naupada. The police have arrested the TMT bus driver.

“Passers-by rushed Usha Vijaykumar Revankar, a resident of Wagale Estate in Thane, to the nearby hospital. However, she was declared dead on arrival,” said an officer from Naupada police station.

The police said the bus had come from Manorama Nagar and was on its way to Thane station.

“Bus driver Santosh Dattatray Vaze, 48, was arrested and booked under sections 304 (A), 279, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code and section 147 of the Motor Vehicle Act,” the officer said. According to a senior TMT official, one of the passers-by who witnessed the accident said the woman passed out while walking on the footpath and came under the bus after she fell on the road.

“In CCTV footage recovered from the area, the woman can be

seen collapsing on the road before being run over by the bus. It appears that she passed out while walking. However, action will be initiated against the driver after a police investigation,” the official added.

He said they checked Vaze’s record, who has been a TMT employee for more than 20 years.

“Vaze doesn’t have a single complaint related to road accidents or rash driving,” he added.
