Amit, Nikhat bag gold at Strandja Memorial Boxing
NEW DELHI: Asian Games goldmedallist Amit Panghal (49kg) on Tuesday claimed a second successive gold at the Strandja Memorial Tournament, in which India’s women boxers also scripted history with a couple of maiden top finishes in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Former junior world champion Nikhat Zareen and Meena Kumari Devi became the first set of Indian women boxers to notch up gold medals at the prestigious tournament, which is into its 70th edition.
In all, India signed off with three gold, a silver, and three bronze medals in this edition of the event, which marks the beginning of the European boxing calendar.
Zareen, a multiple-time national medallist, claimed a 5-0 win in the 51kg category finals against Filipino Irish Magno, while Devi got the better of Aira Villegas 3-2, also from the Philippines, in the bantamweight (54kg) summit clash.
CALICUT HEROES BEAT U MUMBA, IN PVL FINAL
CHENNAI : Calicut Heroes defeating U Mumba Volley in straight sets 3-0 (15-12, 15-9, 16-14) and become the first team to reach the final of the Pro Volleyball League here on Tuesday.
Skipper Jerome Vinith led the scoring for Calicut with 12 points (10 spikes and 2 serves) whereas Vinit Kumar was the leading scorer for U Mumba with seven points (4 spikes and 3 blocks).
The first set started with Calicut taking the early advantage with a 4-2 lead and entered the first Technical Time Out (TTO) with a two-point advantage at 8-6. U Mumba called for a Super Point at 6-9 and successfully converted it with a Pankaj Sharma spike taking a one-point lead. But Calicut caught up with them at 10-10 and went on to win 15-12. The maintained their advantage in the neck-and-neck battle to emerge victorious.
CHANDIGARH WIN IN JR NATIONAL HOCKEY
AURANGABAD: Hockey Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, Hockey Odisha and Hockey Bihar won their respective league matches while Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Hockey Karnataka drew 2-2 their Pool C match in the 9th Hockey India Junior Men’s National Hockey Championship on Tuesday.
In Pool A, Hockey Chandigarh beat Hockey Himachal 7-2 – their second win in the competition. Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy registered their first win in Pool B when they beat The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd. 6-1. In Pool D, Hockey Odisha Punjab & Sind Bank by a lone goal.
