LOW-INTENSITY BLAST IN KALINDI EXPRESS

KANPUR: A low-intensity blast in the toilet of Bhivani-bound Kalindi Express caused widespread panic at the Shivrajpur railway station, some 40 km away from Kanpur. No one was hurt. The blast happened as the train halted at the railway station around 7.30 pm. The passengers told the police there was a loud sound in the general compartmen­t, which got filled with smoke. The RPF and GRP have found partially burnt remnants of a gunny bags near the toilet. Officials said they were not sure at this point what caused the blast. Forensics and ATS experts were on the way, they said.

Indian man shot dead in Florida city in US: Family

HYDERABAD: A 40-year old man from Telangana’s Yadadri Bhongir district was shot dead by unidentifi­ed miscreants in Florida city of the United States on Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Kotha Goverdhan Reddy, working as a clerk at a gas station near Beulah Community on the highway between Baldwin County Line and Pensacola City Limits. According to informatio­n reaching the victims’ relatives, two men, one of them with a hood pulled over his face, barged into the store belonging to the gas station, where Reddy was alone around 8.15pm local time.

Statue of Unity made from scrap, says Congress leader

AHMEDABAD: Leader of Opposition in Gujarat assembly Paresh Dhanani was suspended on Wednesday for a day from ongoing budget session over his comments on the Statue of Unity. Dhanani had said the statue was made from scrap, where in Sardar Patel has been caged, triggering angry response from the ruling party. Along with many BJP legislator­s, chief minister Vijay Rupani demanded Dhanani to withdraw the comments, which he refused. Later, the BJP moved a resolution to suspend him for a day, which was approved by voice vote. Dhanani would not be able to attend the assembly only for a day of remaining two days of the budget session.

Muzaffarpu­r shelter home case file sent to Delhi court

NEW DELHI: Nearly a fortnight after the Supreme Court ordered transfer of the Muzaffarpu­r shelter home case to Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court at Saket in New Delhi, the special court of additional district judge (ADJ) in Muzaffarpu­r, where the trial was going on so far under the POCSO Act, transferre­d all the related files and documents on Monday. The Central Bureau of Investigat­ion (CBI), however, failed to produce the main accused Brajesh Thakur, in time. The court slapped the CBI with show cause notice, listing the matter for February 23.

Meghalaya party quits Bjpled NEDA on Citizenshi­p Bill

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP), a constituen­t of Meghalaya’s ruling alliance, on Wednesday announced that it has severed ties with the Bjp-led Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) over the Citizenshi­p (Amendment) Bill. Formed in 2016, the Northeast Democratic Alliance is an alliance of non-congress parties in the northeast. The UDP is a constituen­t of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), which also includes the BJP. The UDP has nine MLAS in the MDA, while the BJP has two.
