‘Gutted’ Murray out of Australian Open

LONDON: Andy Murray said he was “gutted” to be missing next month’s Australian Open after being ruled out of the first Grand Slam of 2020 with a pelvic injury.

The 32-year-old Scot suffered the injury playing for Britain in the Davis Cup last month and will also miss the inaugural ATP Cup team event in January.

“I’ve worked so hard to get myself into a situation where I can play at the top level and I’m gutted I’m not going to be able to play in Australia in January,” Murray said.

JAMES FIRES AS LAKERS SNAP LOSING STREAK

LOS ANGELES: Lebron James scored a team high 21 points and equalled his season best of 16 assists as Los Angeles Lakers ended a four-game losing streak with a 128-120 win over Portland.

James was a late addition to the line-up because of a groin injury that has hampered his play of late. Kyle Kuzma scored a team-high 24 points and Anthony Davis added 20 points. Elsewhere, Kyle Lowry scored 30 points as the Toronto Raptors avenged a Christmas Day loss to Boston with a 113-97 rematch victory over the Celtics.

ASHISH, SATISH CLINCH OLY QUALIFIERS SPOT

BENGALURU: Asian silver-medallist Ashish Kumar (75kg) and veteran Satish Kumar (+91kg) booked their places in the Indian men’s boxing squad for next year’s Olympic qualifiers, while comeback man Vikas Krishan (69kg) advanced to the finals on the opening day of the trials here on Sunday.

Ashish defeated reigning national champion and South Asian Games gold-medallist Ankit Khatana in a unanimous verdict to be assured of a spot in the squad for the qualifiers. Satish booked his berth with a split verdict triumph over Narender.

VIJAYVEER WINS THREE GOLDS AT NATIONALS

Bhopal:vijayveer Sidhu of Chandigarh claimed the individual gold medal in the men’s 25m standard pistol event of the National Shooting Championsh­ip here on Sunday.

Vijayveer shot 580 to win the top prize and he was followed by Gurpreet Singh (578) and Udhayveer Sidhu (574). Vijayveer (580) also stood atop the podium in the junior section ahead of Udhayveer (574) and Harsh Gupta (572). He combined with Udhayveer and Unish Holinder (1699) to win the team gold in junior.
