Yogi slams Oppn for ‘tarnishing’ India’s image

- Umesh Raghuvanshi

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday attacked the opposition over the ongoing protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and accused it of tarnishing India’s image. “Why so much hue and cry over the CAA? I want to ask those sitting here [opposition members] and supporting the CAA protests: what do you want to achieve by tarnishing India’s image? What do you want to prove by this violence and arson and targeting of innocent people? Do not be under any illusion and please note--the doomsday will never come,” he said during a debate on the budget.

He said those seeking to tweak the law should understand that they would not succeed.“the opposition is acting in an irresponsible manner when India is emerging as an economic power of the world.”

Adityanath said the government believes in dialogue and was not taking away democratic rights.

“But the government will seek the cost of damages from those indulging in violence and arson in the name of the rights.” Adityanath called the anti-caa protests unnecessary as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly said no one would lose citizenship. He said the Congress government enacted the citizenship law in 1955 and the Bharatiya Janata Party government has only amended it. “A law is fine if they enact it. They call it bad law if we enact it. They are creating confusion in the name of the CAA. They are diverting energy of official machinery that should have been working for development,” he said.

Adityanath said the government would not allow anybody to take law into their hands.
