KANPUR: A nine-year-old girl was raped and left on the roadside in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district on Tuesday. She died at the LLR hospital during treatment, police said.

Superintendent of Police of Unnao Vikarant Veer said the post-mortem report confirmed rape and that the police had registered a case of murder and rape. Earlier, the police had registered a case of attempt to murder and rape, Veer said.

The victim, a class 3 student, was found lying on the Chak Road of Shuklakhera village on Tuesday afternoon in a critical condition. Villagers, who were passing by, took her to the Patan community health centre, from where the doctors referred her to the LLR hospital in Kanpur. She died while undergoing treatment, said station house office (SHO) Bihar (the police station area in which the girl had been found), Vikas Pandey.

The police have questioned a few villagers and learned that a young man was seen loitering around the girl. Efforts were being made to establish the identity of the man, said the police.

The management of a government school for meritorious students in Punjab’s Mohali has been booked after a 16-yearold student was found dead in the institute’s hostel on Monday, police said on Wednesday.

“There were injury marks on the victim’s neck and chin,” said station house officer Rajiv Kumar. He added the boy’s postmortem report is awaited even as a preliminary autopsy report mentioned asphyxia (choking caused by either hanging or strangulation) as the cause of death. The boy, who was from Morinda near Mohali, was a Class 11 medical stream student and stayed at the hostel. The boy had scored 92% in the Class 10 board examinations.
