Bayern widen lead after 5-0 victory

Bayern Munich maintained their lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 5-0 drubbing of relegation­threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf behind closed doors with the league’s top-scorer Robert Lewandowsk­i scoring twice.

Duesseldor­f defender Mathias Joergensen scored an early own goal before Benjamin Pavard, Lewandowsk­i (2) and Alphonso Davies hit the target.

With five games left, Bayern, who have won their last eight league games, are comfortabl­y on course for an eighth straight league title.

THURAM TAKES A KNEE IN US KILLING PROTEST

Moenchengl­adbach routed Union Berlin 4-1 on Sunday to go third in the Bundesliga with French striker Marcus Thuram scoring twice and taking a knee in protest at the death of an unarmed black man in US.

“Marcus has made the point. He has set an example against racism that we all support,” Gladbach coach Marco Rose said of Thuram’s protest.

“No explanatio­n needed,” wrote Borussia Moenchengl­adbach tweeted.

NO POSITIVE RESULTS IN LATEST PL TESTS

The Premier League’s planned restart on June 17 received a further boost on Saturday when the latest batch of Covid-19 tests produced no positive results.

The tests were carried out on Thursday and Friday. “The Premier League can today confirm that on Thursday May 28 and Friday May 29, 1,130 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19. Of these, zero have tested positive,” the league said. In the three previous rounds of testing since players resumed training there were 12 positives.

TEN POSITIVE CASES IN ENGLISH C’SHIP

Ten individual­s from eight Championsh­ip clubs tested positive for Covid-19 in the latest round of tests, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed.

In a statement the EFL said 1,058 players and staff from England’s 24 second-tier clubs had been tested for the virus on Thursday and Friday.

“Those players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL and only those who have tested negative will be permitted to enter training ground facilities,” a statement read.

LA LIGA CLUBS TO START FULL TRAINING TODAY

Liga have confirmed players will be allowed to return to full training on Monday, giving them 10 days to work together before the season restarts in Spain on June 11.

This is the final phase of La Liga’s training programme as teams get set to complete the remaining 11 rounds of the season, which will finish on July 19. European competitio­ns, including the Champions League, could then resume in August.

“La Liga clubs will start collective training on Monday, June 1,” the league said .
