New record in daily Covid-19 cases: WHO

LONDON: The World Health Organizati­on reported the highest daily increase in Covid-19 infections so far with more than 294,000 people testing positive in the last 24 hours, BBC news reported on Sunday.

Cases continued to rise with some countries, many in Europe, reporting a resurgence despite apparent successes in suppressin­g initial outbreaks.

France is set to propose that masks be worn in shared workspaces as the country grapples with a rebound in cases.

The UK is putting 2 million jobs in peril by ending its coronaviru­s support programme prematurel­y, a leading think tank said. Britain plans to replace Public Health England with a new agency modelled on Germany’s Robert Koch Institute, the Telegraph

reported.

South Korea, which reported 279 new coronaviru­s cases in the highest daily jump since early March, accused the leader of a religious sect of violating self-isolation rules and obstructin­g investigat­ions into the country’s biggest outbreak in five months.

An outbreak in New Zealand is still growing, health officials said, with 13 new cases and putting the September general election in question.

Russia reached an agreement in principle with Saudia Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to conduct clinical trials of its vaccine, the head of its sovereign wealth fund said. China and Russia may also work together on a vaccine, Zhong Nanshan, a top virus expert in China, said at a meeting.
