‘Remember who shot at kar sevaks’: Shah raises poll pitch in Ayodhya

LUCKNOW: Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday referred to the firing on kar sevaks (volunteers) in 1990 during a campaign to build a Ram Temple in place of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, and asked voters to question Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav over the need for it when he comes to seek votes ahead of the assembly elections.

Akhilesh Yadav’s father, Mulayam Singh, was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh at the time of the firing.

“For ages, a large number of people sacrificed their lives for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. But the temple never came up. Now a magnificent Ram Mandir is being constructed at the birthplace of Lord Ram,” said Shah at a rally in Ayodhya.

“Many efforts were made by Congress, SP and BSP during their tenure to prevent the construction of the Ram temple. Do you remember who shot at Kar sevaks. They were thrashed badly, killed and thrown in the Sarayu River,” said Shah.

“Why did ‘Ram Lalla’ have to stay in a tent for so many years? Who stopped Ram Navami and Deepotsav celebrations in Ayodhya? We must remember all this. Now, no one can stop the construction of a grand Ram Temple here,” he added

He referred to the ongoing income tax raids in UP and attacked the SP saying there was earlier “mafia raj in Uttar Pradesh”

but now, they are surrendering.

“The smell of ‘corruption’s perfume’ shows us how deep are the roots of SP’S sins. When those roots are being attacked, why do you feel ‘sick’ Akhilesh Yadav?” he said.

He listed the development projects of chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s government and added that they include five expressways. Shah said the Ayodhya airport project was going on and the town’s railway station was under renovation.

The SP hit back at Shah’s allegations saying he saffron party was scared.“in 2012, Samajwadi Party won the elections, including the Ayodhya seat, and this time also SP will win the state and Ayodhya as the people of the state and the temple town have made up their mind. Given the scenario, the BJP— from top to bottom is rattled at the way SP is winning peoples’ heart and support. And this scare and frustration is making their top leaders to give absurd statements and speeches”, said former UP minister Pawan Pandey who had won the Ayodhya seat for SP in 2012 polls.
